Ok, not required, but good stuff to watch for all your WW2 related goodness, feel free to add your own

To start with, I'll go the factual route:

    WW2 Week By Week:

    https://www.youtube....33vYu3t70CAPV7X

A really good break down of what was happening week by week 80 years ago all over the globe, broken down into bite size chunks for easy viewing, each video between 10-20 minutes long.

    WW2 - The Apocalypse

    https://www.youtube....h?v=nLLHyLzHIA0

Documentary telling the story of WW2 with over 4 hours of colourised footage spanning all aspects of the conflict.

Considering this week is the anniversary of Operation Market Garden,

I highly recommend 'A Bridge Too Far'

    From IMBD

"The true story of Operation Market Garden, the Allies attempt, in September 1944, to hasten the end of World War II by driving through Belgium and Holland into Germany. The idea was for U.S. airborne divisions to take the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen and a British airborne division, reinforced by a Polish airborne brigade, to take the town of Arnhem. They would be reinforced, in due course and in turn, by the British XXX Corps, land-based and driving up from the British lines in the south. The key to the operation was the bridges, as if the Germans held or blew them, the paratroopers could not be relieved. Faulty intelligence, Allied high command hubris, and stubborn German resistance would ensure that Arnhem was a bridge too far."

    Full Movie

    https://youtu.be/H21zi9hj9-A

(Version does not have subtitles for German parts, although not hard to find this film on various sites around the web)

Some reasons I love this one:

    Its a classic

So many stars of that era its ridiculous.

Due to its age, many of the extras, locations and vehicles are authentic. Extras and advisors served in the war and in the units depicted.

    Some pretty sweet one liners

    Enjoy!

I will hop in on this thread and do recommend some TV series and movies related to WW2 which I highly enjoyed:

    - Band of Brothers (TV miniseries - 10 episodes) - I don't think this requires any introduction or description since we all know how good this mini series was
    - Saving Private Ryan (even if the story is fictional, it still does a pretty good job to show the WW2 D-Day landing
    - Life is beautiful (Original title: La vita e bella) - This is an italian movie about a Jewish Librarian and his family. They get locked up in a concentration camp and he tries his best to protect his child from the dangers around the camp.
    - The boy in striped pyjamas - A movie about the son of a German concentration camp commander befriending a jewish kid.
    - Downfall - Adolf Hitler's secretary tells about his final days
    - The Pacific (I never really watched this, but i heard it's pretty much Band of Brothers but against Japanese)
    - Generation War (Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter) - 3 part miniseries which tells the story of 5 friends who enroll in the German army.

“Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way.”

    - George S. Patton Jr., Patton Principles

  • "Letters to Iwo Jima" 2006.
    - this is a movie coproduced by Clint Eastwood. It shows a japanese narrative on the defense against the invasion of Iwo Jima.

    "Flags of our Fathers" 2006.
    - this is a movie directed by Clint Eastwood. It shows an American narrative of the invasion of Iwo Jima.

Both movies are amazing and should be viewed in close time together, as they are meant to show you both sides and conflicts of the battle.

If you have the stomach for it I would recommend seeing this movie "Come and See" :

    https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091251/

Unlike the action drama movies, this movie isn't action packed at all. It's actually extremely depressing and shocking to watch. But the creator of this movie really succeeds in putting you in the shoes of the main character and gives a an idea what it actually feels like to go through war.

For documentaries, I would recommend watching Soviet storm :

It's actually a Russian documentary, but unlike other WW2 docu's this docu gives a pretty good tactical and strategical overview of the eastern front and highlights the Soviet contribution to WW2, which in my opinion is hardly highlighted in our history books (or even positively).

If you want to dive into the more academic details (which is the most interesting) :

There is a free stanford University podcasts (includes an interesting number of lectures concerning WW2) :

    https://podcasts.app...tem/id384240428

But also many other interesting sources from scolars on youtube :

For general details about the war, I like to follow this interesting channel by a German History major :

    https://www.youtube....GMvU-0x1VCF1hgA

He researches all sorts of topics related to WW2 and the Wehrmacht.

I am finding a few of these independent low budget short films, not a bad watch at all, might need subtitles though

Interesting newsreel from Germany during the summer of 44. Showing a lot of german kit, as well as just normal soldiers. Propaganda for the most part, showing a lot of actions as victories even when we now know the German forces were more or less in full retreat by this point, but still interesting.

Note the extensive use of camo (real pioneerss of certain things still in use) and one tank commander getting the iron cross for knocking out 12 tanks
